Armand V. Feigenbaum, the president and CEO of General Systems Co. of Pittsfield, is one of eight recipients chosen to receive the 2007 National Medal of Technology and Innovation.
The National Medal of Technology and Innovation, formerly the National Medal of Technology, is the highest honor for technological achievement bestowed by the President of the United States on America's leading innovators. Feigenbaum and the seven other recipients will receive their awards from President George W. Bush on Monday, Sept. 29, in Washington.

"This may sound funny, but I am actually humbled by it," the Pittsfield native said yesterday, "because I know it's the nation's leading technology award."
Administered by the Department of Commerce, the National Medal of Technology and Innovation was established by an Act of Congress in 1980. The medal was renamed last year.
The medal is given annually to individuals, teams of up to four members, companies or divisions of companies for their outstanding contributions to the nation's economic, environmental and social well-being through the development and commercialization of technology products, processes and concepts, technological innovation, and the development of the nation's technological manpower.
A 1937 graduate of Pittsfield High School, Feigenbaum is considered one of the world's top thinkers and leaders in the quality field. He said he received the medal for his book "Total Quality Control," a reissue of his 1951 book on management strategy that he first wrote while attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Sloan School of Management in the late 1940s. A Pittsfield native, Feigenbaum, graduated from MIT in 1948. The concept of Total Quality Management was Feigenbaum’s attempt to put into words his ideas about running a company, specifically "how do you provide value to a company that provides for customer satisfaction."
General Systems Co., located across the street from the recently opened Feigenbaum Hall of Innovation and Technology in Pittsfield, is an engineering firm that designs and installs operational systems for corporations worldwide. Armand's younger brother, Donald, is the company's executive vice president and COO. The Feigenbaums founded their company in New York City before moving it to Pittsfield.
