COMMEMORATION STATEMENT FROM MIT
|
Greetings
As Chairman of the Corporation of The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, I am honored to convey, on behalf of the Institute, our warmest congratulations and highest regard to Armand V. Feigenbaum PHD ‘51 and his brother, Donald, for their extraordinary accomplishments as symbolized by the Hall named for them on the auspicious occasion of the opening of The Feigenbaum Hall of Innovation at the Berkshire Museum, Celebrating its 150th anniversary.
Indeed, we at MIT are proud of the intertwining with the institute of the Feigenbaums’ influence. There is perhaps no more telling foreshadowing of the Feigenbaums’ lifelong impact on innovation and practical application – that powerful combination celebrated in MIT’s motto, ‘Mens et Manus’ – than Dr. A.V. Feigenbaum’s book, Quality Control – Principles, Practice, and Administration, accepted by McGraw-Hill for publication in 1951, the year that he received his degree from MIT. Its publication the following year defined for the first time the transition from Quality’s original emphasis as a field of statistics to today’s emphasis upon Total Quality Management (TQM) and its Systems Engineering which became one of its foundations.
With recognition of and deep respect for Armand V. Feigenbaum PHD ’51 and Donald Feigenbaum and their role in technological innovation,
/Dana G. Mead/
